Dear friends,

I would like to first thank you for being here tonight and closely following the DAB's development.

Tonight, the DAB held our first meeting of the 13th Central Committee and we have elected a new leadership. I am deeply honoured and humbled to be elected as DAB's new chairperson. On behalf of our party's new Central Committee, I thank all DAB members for entrusting us with the solemn duty and responsibilities in steering this party onwards. We will cherish their trust and face challenges ahead -- with humility, courage, and hard works.

It has been almost 23 years since the founding of the DAB. Under the leadership of Mr Tsang Yok Sing, Mr Ma Lik, and Mr Tam Yiu Chung, the DAB has thrived and flourished. Today, we have more than 27,000 members and over 200 district offices serving the public. We have 13 Legco Councillors and 132 District Councillors. Modest as it might be, what the DAB is today is a culmination of the outstanding leadership of our three previous chairpersons, all of our relentlessly hardworking party members and volunteers, and the confidence and support entrusted by the general public. I hereby express my deepest gratitude and greatest respect to all of them once again.

The DAB was founded and has grown on the simple, yet, powerful conviction: that our members all love our country as we love Hong Kong, and we believe that our beloved city and nation share the same fate. The DAB’s mission is to uphold this very conviction and join hands with all our citizens, to contribute to the cause of "One Country Two Systems”. To do so, we monitor the government with productive proposals, so as to foster the progress of Hong Kong -- and we shall continue to do so relentlessly.

Today, this mission and the responsibilities in leading the DAB have been entrusted with us. It is a great honour that comes with greater responsibilities. We will remember the principles of our three previous chairpersons, which are: to build Hong Kong with sincerity and hard works, according to our Founding chairperson Mr Tsang Yok Sing; to monitor the government with objectivity and honesty, according to Mr Ma Lik; and to serve the community with pragmatism, according to Mr Tam Yiu Chung. These principles will be upheld from generation to generation to bring about a better future.

2015 is a critical year for Hong Kong. "Strife" has become a new social norm. How will our political system move forward? Will it be possible for our citizens to elect our Chief Executive by one person one vote -- universal suffrage -- in 2017? Many questions remain. The DAB firmly believes that a system which allows citizens to vote in a CE election must be better than a system which does not; a system which allows 5 million citizens to elect the CE must be better than a system which allows only 1,200 people to do so; a political system is better with progress than with no progress at all.

The DAB will walk with the general public, side by side, step by step, hand in hand, to explore ways for democracy to flourish under the principle of One Country and Two Systems.

Hong Kong has experienced and weathered unprecedented turmoil in 2014, and they are laid heavily upon all of us. The DAB is strongly opposed to violence, destruction, obstruction and all things stemmed in hate, because we know they do not make Hong Kong a better place, city and home. We must replace violence with dialogue, hatred with love, and sabotage with harmony. Let us recall our values and return to the path where conflicts can be resolved by communicating and consensus can be reached with mutual respect.

My dear friends, the DAB’s chief role is to contribute to Hong Kong. Deeply rooted in the community, the DAB is committed to serving all members of our society. We will continue to listen humbly to the voices from all walks of life, and research public policies with professionalism, so as to better serve the public. We will focus even more on youth engagement, and are committed to their causes and issues of education, career and home ownership. We will spare no effort in fostering social cohesion and progress. We are ready to do more and to give more in making Hong Kong a better home for all of us.

Thank you.
